CALVIN: Calvin is named for a sixteenth-century theologian who believed in predestination. Most people assume that Calvin is based on a son of mine, or based on detailed memories of my own childhood. In fact, I don't have children, and I was a fairly quiet, obedient kid – almost Calvin's opposite. One of the reasons that Calvin's character is fun to write is that I often don't agree with him.

Many of Calvin's struggles are metaphors for my own. I suspect that most of us get old without growing up, and that inside every adult (sometimes not very far inside) is a bratty kid who wants everything his own way. I use Calvin as an outlet for my immaturity, as a way to keep myself curious about the natural world, as a way to ridicule my own obsessions, and as a way to comment on human nature. I wouldn't want Calvin in my house, but on paper, he helps me sort through my life and understand it.

HOBBES: Named after a seventeenth-century philosopher with a dim view of human nature, Hobbes has the patient dignity and common sense of most animals I've met. Hobbes was very much inspired by one of our cats, a gray tabby named Sprite. Sprite not only provided the long body and facial characteristics for Hobbes, she also was the model for his personality. She was good-natured, intelligent, friendly, and enthusiastic in a sneaking-up-and-pouncing sort of way. Sprite suggested the idea of Hobbes greeting Calvin at the door in midair at high velocity.

The so-called "gimmick" of my strip -- the two versions of Hobbes -- is sometimes misunderstood. I don't think of Hobbes as a doll that miraculously comes to life when Calvin's around. Neither do I think of Hobbes as the product of Calvin's imagination.

Calvin sees Hobbes one way, and everyone else sees Hobbes another way. I show two versions of reality, and each makes complete sense to the participant who sees it. I think that's how life works. None of us sees the world exactly the same way, and I just draw that literally in the strip.

CALVIN’S PARENTS: I've never given Calvin's parents names, because as far as the strip is concerned, they are important only as Calvin's mom and dad. Calvin's dad has been rumored to be a self-portrait. All my characters are half me, so it's true in some ways, but Calvin's dad is also partly a satire of my own father. Any strip about how suffering "builds character" is usually a verbatim transcript of my dad's explanations for why we were all freezing, exhausted, hungry, and lost on camping trips. These things are a lot funnier after twenty-five years have passed.

Calvin's mom is the daily disciplinarian, a job that taxes her sanity, so I think we get to see her at her best. I regret that the strip mostly shows her impatient side, but I try to hint at other aspects of her personality and her interests by what she's doing when Calvin barges in.

As secondary characters, I've tried to keep Calvin's parents realistic, with a reasonable sense of humor about having a kid like Calvin. I think they do a better job than I would.

SUSIE DERKINS: Susie is earnest, serious and smart. I suspect that Calvin has a mild crush on her that he expresses by trying to annoy her, but Susie is a bit unnerved and put off by Calvin's weirdness. This encourages Calvin to be even weirder, so it's a good dynamic. Neither of them quite understands what's going on, which is probably true of most relationships.

MISS WORMWOOD: As a few readers guessed, Miss Wormwood is named after the apprentice devil in C. S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters. I have a lot of sympathy for Miss Wormwood. We see hints that she's waiting to retire, that she smokes too much, and that she takes a lot of medication. I think she seriously believes in the value of education, so needless to say, she's an unhappy person.

ROSALYN: Probably the only person Calvin fears is his baby-sitter. I put her in a Sunday strip early on, never thinking of her as a regular character, but her intimidation of Calvin surprised me, so she's made a few appearances since. Rosalyn even seems to daunt Calvin's parents, using their desperation to get out of the house to demand advances and raises.

Rosalyn's relationship with Calvin is pretty one-dimensional, so baby-sitter stories get harder and harder to write, but for a later addition to the strip, she's worked pretty well.

MOE: Moe is every jerk I've ever known. He's big, dumb, ugly, and cruel. I remember school being full of idiots like Moe. I think they spawn on damp locker room floors.

Google has introduced a new security feature for gmail, remote logout. Many of use different computers to login into gmail. For example, home , office , sometimes from friends place. At times we leave the browser opened dont logout of gmail properly , if the computer is at office or any public place your account might be mis-used. Now sitting at home computer you can logout of gmail in office computer or any other computer.

Footer in gmail contains your session details like when you last logged in & from which IP.

You can click on “Details” link which shows you a pop-up having details about your last sessions.

Check for all the sessions, see all are yours or somebody else is logging into your account! Click on “Sign out all other sessions” to sign out of gmail at all other places exept the current.

How Tos are the most common questions people ask when they have to start something new.
There is a WikiHow that gives you textual answers for all of your "How To"s but here is a new startup that gives you your "How TO" answer visually. When I said visually, ofcourse it means video. Your "How To" videos. The site is called HowCast.com
The site got millions of hits within few weeks of its launch. Probably because it has ex-googler's name associated with it. There is already a similar site called Tutorialized.com where you get tutorials for everything. The site basically is an aggregator for the tutorials. People can submit tutorials, recommened tutorials or browse through the available tutorials.

Howcast is also a similar site but with the video tutorials instead of just text/image tutorials. Once you signup, you can browse the How to videos, suggest a topic for the how to video or can upload your own expert "How To" video.

I found HowCast pretty useful.So u guys give a try .. It s worth giving .. !!

The wait is over. 160 weeks after he became the no 2, the man from Mallorca(Majorca), the undisputed king of clay Rafael Nadal is the new world no 1. Emulating the great Bjorn Borg by winning 4 consecutive French Open titles and his first Wimbledon title this july, he is only the third person after Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg to win both the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.

Nadal turned pro in 2001 and surged his way past other players finishing 200th by the end of 2002 and 49th by the end of 2003. His 2004 season was marred by stress fracture in his left ankle and he missed the clay court season including the French Open. It was in the same year when he met the then world no 1 Roger Federer at the Miami Masters for the first time and defeated him in straight sets. In 2005 the world began to see Nadal as a legend in the making. He won 24 consecutive matches on clay which includes the Masters series held at Monte Carlo, Rome, Montreal and Madrid and also his first French Open title becoming the only player since Mats Wilander to win the French Open in his debut appearance. On July 25 2005 he became the world no 2 which he held till august 18 this year, for a record 160 weeks, before becoming world no 1.

In 2006 he broke Guillermo Vilas's record by winning 53 consecutive matches on clay. Also he won the French Open for the second time defeating Roger Federer in 4 sets and became the only player at that time to defeat Federer in a grand slam final. However he lost to Federer in the Wimbledon finals. In the following year Nadal stretched his consecutive clay court victories to 81 and finally lost to Federer at the Hamburg Masters but defeated Federer again at Roland Garros to win his third straight French Open title. The duo met again in the Wimbledon finals which Federer won in 5 sets. This was the first time since 2001 Federer was forced to play 5 sets at Wimbledon. The duo also played in an exhibition match called "Battle of Surfaces" in a court which was half grass and half clay. Nadal defeated Federer again. Finally in 2008, Nadal beat Federer at Wimbledon ending Federer's 65 matches unbeaten run on grass and for the first time since 2003 Wimbledon saw a new champion.

Nadal also won gold medal at the Beijing Olympics, the only player ranked inside top 5 to win gold in Olympics.

Besides winning so many tournaments, Nadal has been participating in the Chennai Open every year since 2004 except in 2006 which he missed because of a foot injury. Though he hasn't won singles title yet, he won the doubles title with Tommy Robredo in 2004. This is what Nadal said about the Chennai Open "I like the crowd and their enthusiasm and support and they always push you to give your best".

Nadal hails from a family of sports persons. He was good in both football and tennis but chose to go with tennis. He is a big fan of Real Madrid and his hometown club Real Mallorca.

Iphone India - Airtel announces its launch date

Bharti Airtel has issued an official statement on the launch of the iPhone 3G.

The iPhone 3G will be launched in India on August 22, by Airtel. The price though still seems to be a mystery as they are still tight lipped about it .

"iPhone has been the iconic technology revelation of this year, "said Sanjay Kapoor, president of Mobile Services at Bharti Airtel. "Airtel has been at the forefront of innovation and customer delight in the Indian telecom sector. Introducing iPhone 3G to India further underscores our commitment to enrich the communication experience of all Airtel users."

Customers will be able to purchase the iPhone 3G at Airtel Relationship Centers.

Yahoo has just upgraded its popular social bookmarking service Del.icio.us and now removed the dots from in between Delicious words.

It has more than three million users and 100 million bookmarked URLs.

Delicious uses a non-hierarchical keyword categorization system in which users can tag each of their bookmarks with a number of freely chosen keywords. A combined view of everyone's bookmarks with a given tag is available.

The new Delicious.com seems rejuvenated with many new features such as New Tag Bar to navigate bookmarks by tags and tag combinations ,new UI that gives better usability. You can now organize the site in Bookmarks, People and Tags categories.

Iphone Update - pricing in India

Offices , blogs , magazines , journals all have been abuzz with discussions on what Apple’s much-awaited product will be priced at. They are taking lots of guesses .

Many of us may think it will be just over Rs 8,000 — the rupee equivalent of the price in the US, which is $199. Now, that’s a fantastic price for the 8GB product, and will certainly have every competitor worried.

Nokia’s 8GB N95 , for instance, is priced at well over Rs 25,000, and its new N96 is expected to come at over Rs 36,000.

But there are speculations that it will be priced substantially higher than Rs 8,000.

The sourceat economic times says ,

"The $199 price is a hugely subsidised one, subsidised by the US operator AT&T. Market researcher iSuppli has just estimated that mobile phone service providers are subsidising each handset to the extent of $300.

Some other analysts think the subsidy is higher at $350 per unit. In other words, the actual price that AT&T pays to Apple for each iPhone unit is $499, going by the iSuppli estimate.

Vodafone and Airtel are unwilling to talk about the price they will offer the iPhone at, but Bharti Airtel CEO Manoj Kohli told TOI there is no question of subsidising the handset in India. “US operators are able to subsidise handsets because they can make up for that with their call charges. They charge rates like 25 cents a minute. In India, the charge is 1.5 to 2 cents a minute,” Kohli said.

In the absence of a subsidy then, the handset could be priced at $499 or a little over Rs 21,000 (governmental levies on mobile phones in India are marginal).

Unless Apple chooses to offer the iPhone at lower margins to countries like India. iSuppli estimates it costs Apple just $173 to produce the latest version (excluding the cost of software development, shipping, distribution, packaging and accessories included with each iPhone). So it enjoys a huge margin on the product. "

But , whatever the price may be the iphone ll be the hottest gadget when it s released .

Anil Ambani to buy NewCastle United ??

According to the News of the World, NewCastle United football club owner Mike Ashley is in talks with two companies who are willing to pay £260 million to buy out the club. The companies in question are Reliance Communications and the Profitable Group.

Reliance Communications is headed by Anil Ambani, one of the richest men in the world with a personal fortune the News of the World suggests is around £21 billion.

However, the company have issued an official statement that firmly refutes the rumours.

“The news report is completely false and baseless. There are no such plans," read the statement.

Solar eclipse August 1 2008 video

INDIA witnessed a partial solar eclipse on Friday (August 1) and large swathes in the Eastern part of the country were able to see a large fraction of the solar disc eclipsed by the moon.

The partial eclispe was visible in Northeast India from 4pm, but the last and final phase was seen in most parts of the country. Only few countries in the world were able to witness the total eclipse, which included Canada, Central Russia, Mongolia and China.

In Delhi, the eclipse began at 4:03pm and ended at 5:56pm and the maximum impact was visible at 5:02pm. In Mumbai, the timing was 4:27pm to 6:03pm, while Chennai it was at 4.40pm, Kolkata was between 4:18pm and 6:02pm.

Google launches Knol as rival to Wikipedia

Google has launched an online encyclopedia to take on Wikipedia.

Knol, which stands for unit of knowledge, allows internet users to write articles on their own areas of expertise.

The world's largest search engine is hoping that "knols" will be written on every conceivable topic ranging from gardening and pottery to Byzantine art and neo-classical literature. The free service will inevitably draw comparisons with Wikipedia but Google says it differs from it in many ways.

Unlike Wikipedia, which allows visitors to edit its pages, people will not be able to make changes or contribute to a person's knol without their permission.

Knols written on the same subject will also remain separate and compete for the attention of visitors, who will be able to give online feedback. Pictures of authors will also be displayed on their knol web pages.

Udi Manber, Google's vice president of engineering, said: "We believe that knowing who wrote what will significantly help users make better use of web content.

"Books have authors' names right on the cover, news articles have bylines, scientific articles always have authors; but somehow the web evolved without a strong standard to keep authors names highlighted."

Contributors will be able to make money from the service by allowing adverts which relate to their articles to appear on their pages.

Juergen Galler, Google's director of product management said: "The internet is huge, but still a lot of expert knowledge remains untapped."

"Knol provides a way for people to share their expertise with others - and get credit for their contribution."

The service is part of a growing drive by Google to expand beyond simple search and into other areas such as desk top publishing and mobile phones.

But taking on Wikipedia is no mean feat. With 116 million global users a month - a third of the internet population - it consistently ranks among the most visited websites in the world.

While Windows lets you add a "desktop" toolbar to the taskbar that will let you launch items saved on your desktop, DeskTopOnTop goes one step further and actually shows you a visual representation of your desktop.

Apple introduces MacBook Air - the world's thinnest notebook

Apple introduced the MacBook Air, a computer that the company says , the world's thinnest notebook .

It's priced starting at $1,799 and will be available within two weeks.

Sporting a silvery finish, the MacBook Air features a 13.3-inch LED-backlit widescreen display that has a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution.It weighs about 3 pounds(less than 1.5 kg), and sports a thickness of 0.16-0.76 inches. It's 12.8 inches wide and 8.95 inches deep.

The MacBook Air also features a built-in iSight webcam and a full sized MacBook-style black keyboard. The MacBook Air features a 1.8-inch hard disk drive with 80GB of storage capacity standard. A 64GB solid-state disk (SSD) drive is an option. The hard drive is a Parallel ATA (PATA) model that operates at 4200 RPM.

The laptop is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo chip running at 1.6GHz, with 1.8GHz available as an option. Jobs noted that Intel was willing to engineer a new version of the Core 2 Duo specifically to Apple's specifications -- it's 60 percent smaller than others. The chip operates with 4MB of on-chip shared L2 cache running at full processor speed, and uses an 800MHz frontside bus. 2GB of 667MH DDR2 SDRAM is also included.

The MacBook Air also includes 802.11n-based wireless networking support and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.

Apple estimates that with wireless networking turned on, the MacBook Air can get about 5 hours of battery life.

What's the difference between putting your PC in Hibernate or Standby mode? Yeah, we weren't sure either. Luckily the Productivity Portfolio weblog schools us on the finer details of Windows XP power schemes.

Using Standby:

Your machine recovers quickly as your data is stored in RAM. The slower part is waking up the peripherals. Although your machine is in "standby" the power has been cut to items such as your hard drive and monitor. You're running your machine in a very low power mode, but it is still on. This mode can be useful if you're on a notebook and need to conserve your battery while you step away.

With Hibernate:

The big difference is that your PC has shut down and is not pulling power. Another difference is that your data is saved to your hard disk and not RAM. This makes it a safer, but slower option for shut down and resume.

Not all PCs have the capability and are configured to Hibernate. If yours is, to see the Hibernate option on your XP shutdown screen, hold down the Shift key when you shut down .

If you are worried that some programs on your PC are secretly making connections to websites in the background, here's a quick tip that uses a simple DOS command to detect and prevent such suspicious activity:

1. Type cmd in your Windows Run box.
2. Type "netstat -b 5 > activity.txt" and press enter. After say 2 minutes, press Ctrl+C.
3. Type "activity.txt" on the command line to open the log file

The file activity.txt will have a log of all process that made a connection to the Internet in the last two minutes. It will also show which process connected to which website in this time. And not just the web browsers (like iexplore.exe or opera.exe), the log will also show your IM clients, download managers, email programs or any software that requires a net connection.

Scroll though the activity.txt file and look for any process names or website addresses that you are not aware of. If you track one , go to the task manager (or Process Explorer) to find the location of the executable on your computer and eliminate it.

Comcast has soft-launched its TV and movie portal Fancast . The site is a portal for fans of movies, TV shows, actors and directors, aiming to be “the one place where you can find what to watch, where to watch, when to watch it - plus all the video, photos and facts you crave.”

There’s also a “My Fancast” section where you can save and rate your favorite movies and shows. Other features include tagging and a game called “Six Degrees”, which helps you find relationships between actors, shows and movies in a system inspired by the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. There are TV listings, too.

Google Rises in Rank as Most Improved Brand

We all know that branding is important. Image is everything. And according to a report from Interbrand, Google has been deemed the most improved brand.
According to a survey of global brands, Google has gained the most in value of the past year. Interbrand reports that Google’s brand value has increased 44% in the past year to $17.8bn, bringing it to rank at number 20 on the short list of Best Global Brands. Coca-Cola tops this list for the seventh year in a row, and a few tech companies aren’t far behind, with Microsoft, IBM, GE and Nokia respectively in second, third, fourth and fifth place. Intel isn’t too far either, coming in at number seven. The brands’ value is determined according to how important it is in its sector.
So that means that people really value Google as a brand, and is important to the general public as its own entity. Things like this can’t be taken lightly, especially when it comes to publicly traded companies. The public’s perspective on a company can have an impact directly on its value. There are a great many factors that could have caused its rise, including its numerous acquisitions like YouTube, new developments such as Google Checkout, as well as its furthered integration into mainstream media, specifically its new goals for a print ad distribution network.

uTorrent Relaunched as Official BitTorrent Client

BitTorrent Inc launched their rebranded version of uTorrent as BitTorrent 6.0.

The rebranded version of uTorrent looks just like the original uTorrent client, however, it now includes BitTorrent DNA. Another significant change is the absence of the built in search for sites like Mininova, Torrentz and The PirateBay. However, you can easily add those under options –> preferences.

Cisco axes Linksys branding

Cisco CEO John Chambers recently announced at a European roundtable discussion that Linksys products would now sport the Cisco name. Chambers was quoted as saying that "it would all come, over time, into a Cisco brand," and he also noted that the reason the Linksys name was kept alive was because "it was better known in the US than even Cisco was for the consumer." As the firm "goes globally," he concluded, there would be "little advantage" in keeping it around.

µTorrent 1.7.1 released

µTorrent 1.7 version has been released .

The biggest changes were full Vista support and the removal of the 65,536 piece limit for torrents.
Also added was support for finding local peers (peers on the same LAN) and optionally not having any upload restrictions for them.
It is also possible to turn on automatic updating for betas now, found in the "Other" section of the preferences.

New WiFi Record: 237 Miles

A Venezuelan techie apparently has set a new record for longest WiFi link. Networking guru Ermanno Pietrosemoli established a wireless connection between a PC in El Aguila, Venezuela, and one in Platillon Mountain, a distance of about 237 miles, mostly using off-the-shelf equipment and a few hacked parts.
The previous record was 193 miles, between a balloon and an Earth-bound PC, which rather cuts down on the risk of signal-bouncing obstacles.
Pietrosemoli notes in the project description that one of the benefits of doing this kind of work out in the Latin American boonies is you don't have to worry much about signal interference.
And yes, I now feel a whole new kind of stupid for not being able to get a reasonable signal between home office and bedroom.

Hamilton wins US Grand Prix

British rookie Lewis Hamilton won the US Grand Prix on Sunday to take his second victory in a row and forge 10 points clear of McLaren team mate Fernando Alonso in the Formula One championship.

Hamilton crossed the line 1.518 seconds ahead of the double world champion for his seventh podium finish in seven extraordinary starts.

Brazilian Felipe Massa was third for Ferrari ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen.

Another Finn, Heikki Kovalainen, was fifth for Renault and Italian Jarno Trulli finished sixth in a Toyota.

How Google Earth Works ??

Google Earth - Almost everyone of us is familiar with it .. we ve seen the satellite imageries of our college(SSNCE), !! and perhaps somebody of you could have had a pretty good look at their house even .. in google earth !!(How many ve seen ur house in google earth ??).Well , ever wondered how all these are possible .. ?? and how these work ?? (Nope ??) . Then , plunge into this article before something more attractive in the web distracts you ..(Yeah,i get distracted too much . My level of distraction in web is well above the observed limits of normal people .. Sounds too much ?? ) ..

Google Earth is currently available for download as a desktop application, although you need to be connected to the Internet to use it. Every time you open Google Earth, it automatically connects to Google's servers, giving you access to terabytes of geographical, political and social data. For instance, you can view a city with certain "layers" turned on, including topographical information, population data and crime statistics for the area. The layers and all of the map navigation buttons, including zoom, tilt and rotate, are all located in the Google Earth frame.

Google Earth comprises an array of features that would probably take months to fully utilize, the basic features fit loosely into the following categories:

Local search
Sightseeing

Let's find out where Google Earth gets its data.

Google Earth was once a premium program called Keyhole that cost about $90. When Google purchased Keyhole, it inherited terabytes of digital mapping data and set about creating a basic version of the software that would be available for free download. Now you're all caught up.

The photographic maps available on Google Earth come primarily from two sources: satellites and aircraft. Google gets this imagery and other digital mapping information from sources such as TeleAtlas and EarthSat, both of which compile photographs and maps into digital form for commercial applications. Because the data comes from different sources, it's provided at different resolutions, which is why some areas of the globe appear crisp even at street level while others are blurry from a great distance. Google is striving to have as much high definition coverage of the world as possible. When you use Google Earth, you're not viewing the imagery in real-time: according to Google, the information is no more than three years old and is continually updated as new data becomes available.

Google Earth has several countries like the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom covered to street level, meaning you can zoom in and view road names and local businesses and get directions from here to there. The database has a good amount of information on other regions like Western Europe, India and Japan as well, but the rest of the world is hit or miss. While you can zoom in and get a pretty good look at the Egyptian pyramids, you can't see street names or find a grocery store in the area. Google is constantly adding more information to its databases, though, and the maps are getting better with each update.

This brings us to another source of Google Earth's data: the Google search engine. Part of what makes Google Earth so addictive is its collaboration with Google search. When you're viewing a city, you can search for coffee shops, restaurants, grocery stores, bars and tons of other businesses in the vicinity, and you can click on them to get detailed information from the Google search engine. Users can also add a business location to a map by clicking on "Add/Edit a Business Listing" in the Google Earth toolbar.

In the last few years RAID has become really quite popular. Once purely in the domain of high-end enterprise servers, today, any self respecting enthusiast motherboard had better have onboard RAID if it wants to be taken seriously. The abundance of onboard RAID controllers mean that it’s not unusual to see small arrays in today’s home computers. The reasons for this can be for increased speed, increased reliability or simply for bragging rights. After all, two (or more) disks are better than one, right?

Depending on whom you ask, RAID can stand for either Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks or Redundant Array of Independent Disks. Technically, the former was the original name given to the use of arrays of more than one drive. The term ‘inexpensive’ was used as RAID was used as a substitute to proprietary disk solutions that, while they offered acceptable performance and fault tolerance, were prohibitively expensive.

RAID was a way to increase performance and add fault tolerance whilst using off-the-shelf disks, reducing costs greatly. There are many different types of RAID and each has their own strengths and drawbacks, no single level of RAID is ‘the best’ and it is important that one picks which RAID level best suits their particular situation.

The different types of RAID can offer a multitude of benefits, whether it’s for an oracle database being accessed by thousands of users simultaneously, for a high performance HD video workstation or simply for a home user storing photos. Each different case obviously has a different set of requirements, and a vastly different budget. Deciding on which level of RAID to use is always a balance between the pros and cons of each. The main aspects to consider are performance, redundancy and of course cost.

Some RAID levels are more focused on getting all out performance without bothering with redundancy, others provide redundancy as a foremost concern and performance can suffer accordingly. Certain types of RAID require a powerful hardware controller to give acceptable performance, resulting in high costs, whereas others can give adequate performance using a software solution.

So what exactly can RAID offer?

Increased Performance
There is a limit to the rate at which data can be read from or written to a hard disk platter. Unfortunately due to the mechanical construction of hard drives this limit is considerably slower than the rate at which data travels around every other part of a computer. The platters and actuators inside a hard drive can only move so fast and are bound to mechanical constraints and tolerances that solid state storage (i.e. ram) does not suffer from.

Most implementations of RAID offer increased performance over a single disk by reading from or writing to many disks at the same time. In theory, data can be retrieved from two disks in half the time as from a single disk, from eight disks four times as fast as from two disks and etcetera. Of course in practice this is not exactly true, as RAID controller overheads and calculations for redundancy slow down the process, but whether it’s an array of two disks or two thousand disks, RAID can certainly increase performance.

Data Security
Data security is the concept that an array can suffer the complete failure of one, or sometimes many hard drives and not lose any of the data contained on the array. This is done through data redundancy, i.e. some disk capacity is sacrificed for the sake of keeping extra data. Redundancy can be provided via mirroring, that is, a duplicate copy of all of the data is held through parity information, which we’ll come to later.

Data Availability
Data availability, not to be confused with data security, is when an array can sustain a disk failure with neither data loss nor interruption to service. While this feature may not be especially important to a home user, it can be vital to a business. Sometimes it’s simply not acceptable to shut down a service, a website for instance, simply to replace a failed disk. Data availability must include data security, but data security does not necessarily constitute data availability. Hot-swapping and hot-sparing are features implemented in many RAID controllers that allow recovery of a failed disk without taking the array offline.

Increased Capacity
When you need a lot of space on a single volume, sometimes the largest hard drives available are not large enough. If you wanted to record several hours of uncompressed 1080p video even the latest and greatest 1TB drive wouldn’t be large enough to hold all of that information. An array of several 500GB disks would not only create a single ‘drive’ with sufficient space, but would also be far cheaper per GB than the flagship 1TB models. It isn’t just necessarily extreme space requirements that can benefit from this. If you need an ultra high-performance database, it makes sense to use ultra high-performance drives. Currently 2.5” 15k RPM drives are the crème de la crème of high I/O performane, and you’re going to need more than one of them as the largest available is a mere 73GB.

A flash memory card standard which promises removable media that can be inserted into either a USB 2.0 port or a MMC reader has been developed.

miCard is designed to make it easy to transfer data between devices such as digital cameras and computers without the need for a card reader. The card will initially come with an adaptor to fit standard MMC slots.

Adding USB 2.0 capability to a memory card provides an interface that is compatible with existing products and widely recognised by general consumers

miCard will have an 8GB capacity, although the MultiMediaCard Association (MMCA) claims that capacities of up to 2TB will be possible. The card measures 12mm x 21mm x 1.95mm.

Vodafone advances website rendering for mobiles

Vodafone has launched its mobile internet strategy, and claims to have made significant advances in rendering web pages for mobile devices.

"What we've done is [to] work with some of our suppliers, such as Novarra, to ensure that pages display properly. [The technology] understands how the web page is put together and repurposes that for mobile," a spokesperson told ,adding that Novarra's technology was able to detect which handset was being used to access the content.

The process involves compressing the content to roughly a tenth of its original size, the advantages naturally are , much lower data usage and higher download speeds, the spokesperson said, while conceding that some Flash-heavy sites may still not render as intended.

Many popular sites, such as YouTube and MySpace, have been difficult to render on a small screen. Vodafone, however, has already partnered with these and several other sites to deliver mobile-friendly versions of their content.

In a further development of Vodafone's mobile internet strategy, users will be able to aggregate up to five email accounts,including webmail and POP3 — into a unified client.

ZFS to become file system in Leopard

Sun's Jonathan Schwartz announced today at Sun event in Washington D.C. that Apple would be making ZFS "the file system" in Mac OS 10.5 Leopard

Rumors of Apple's interest in ZFS began in April 2006, when an OpenSolaris mailing list revealed that Apple had contacted Sun regarding porting ZFS to OS 10. The file system later began making appearances in Leopard builds.

meebo is launching Meebo Rooms, a rich media chat room product that users can put on their blogs and websites. They can be private or public chat rooms, and can feature video content from sources such as youtube and NBC.

Meebo's core product is a browser-based IM platform, allowing people to use multiple IM accounts on the one webpage. Meebo has 2 million registered users and gets about 1 million sessions and 100 million messages per day. According to the press release, meebo rooms "are places where people can chat and view media live with IM buddies, both inside meebo.com and across the Web on their own pages." Wireless USB is the future

Forget cables; the way you'll connect devices to your PC will be wireless. That's according to new research from In-Stat which predicts that Wireless USB will become the way to connect kit to your PC by 2008.

The wireless variant works in exactly the same way as cabled USB, but uses a short wave radio technology. And it's about to explode.

Some devices already exist, but hubs and other connection kit will be available commercially later in the year. In-Stat reckons there's plenty of potential in the market. Over two billion wired USB devices shipped last year, and it expects Wireless USB to grow by over 10 per cent annually.

"Certified WUSB is designed to replace USB cables on the PC desktop, as well as to facilitate temporary connections between mobile and fixed devices, such as portable digital audio players and PCs, or digital still cameras and printers," says Brian O'Rourke an analyst at In-Stat.

Next Gen of Wi-Fi Is Planned for Summer

The next generation of wireless Internet products certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance is expected to hit shelves this summer, even though a final standard for the technology isn't due for another year, the industry group says.

The Wi-Fi Alliance was announcing Wednesday that it will begin certifying wireless routers, networking cards, microchips and other so-called "Draft N" products in June. The products, which take their name from the upcoming 802.11n technical standard, are expected to reach retail stores shortly thereafter.

Wi-Fi comes in several flavors _ "b," "a," "g," and soon "n" _ referring to the subsection of the technical guidelines issued by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a technical professional organization.

The "n" version is expected to be about five times faster than the widely used "g" variety, though in practice, speeds rarely reach what's listed on the box. Draft N products are said to offer better reach through walls and into dead spots and will use multiple radios to send and receive data, making them better at handling big video files.

Gear rated to handle n-level wireless already is being sold. But the Wi-Fi Alliance said certified Draft N items from different vendors are guaranteed to work together and to work with older certified Wi-Fi products.

Karen Hanley, senior director of marketing for the Austin, Texas-based industry group, said the wireless industry shipped 200 million Wi-Fi products last year worldwide. Over the next few years, the category will expand from mostly laptops and access points to Wi-Fi enabled cell phones, televisions and video games.

Hanley said the final 802.11n standard isn't expected until 2009.

Free-Internet plan gets S.F. controller's office OK

The San Francisco controller's office issued a favorable review Friday on a proposal by EarthLink and Google to provide the city with free wireless Internet access.

The report estimates residents could save $9 million to $18 million in Internet bills annually by having the option of choosing the EarthLink service, which will offer free access as well as a paid service that is cheaper than other broadband options like DSL and cable.

The report said the service will help the city bridge the digital divide, providing many residents with Internet service for the first time. It also noted it would be a boon to EarthLink, giving it a foothold in the San Francisco broadband market.

"I think this is one more reason for the board to approve free Wi-Fi as soon as possible," said Nathan Ballard, spokesman for Mayor Gavin Newsom. "It shows that Wi-Fi creates a favorable impact for the city."

Newsom said in January that the city had finalized language for a contract with EarthLink and Google to provide paid and free Wi-Fi service. EarthLink would pay the city $2 million over four years for the right to build, own and maintain the network. Subscribers would pay $22 a month for 1 megabit per second of broadband service or receive free service with speeds topping out at 300 kilobits per second.

Hitachi is set to launch a 1000GB Blu-ray recorder. The product that was shown at the Harvey Norman Conference being held at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. According to Hitachi Australia the device will go on sale in 2008 for around $2,000.

A leader in storage devices, Hitachi has also released in the USA for US$400 the Deskstar 7K1000. It was first announced at CES 2007 as the world's first one-terabyte hard drive and has now been shipping for a month.

Microsoft to sell $1B in software to Lenovo

Lenovo has signed a deal with Microsoft to buy Windows, Office and other software suites for its personal computers in a deal worth as much as $1.3 billion.

The agreement emulates one inked in 2006, worth $1.2 billion over one year, to pre-install Microsoft's (Charts, Fortune 500) Windows operating system software on Lenovo's computers, deemed a major step in China's efforts to combat piracy.

Both firms hoped to advance "one of the most important goals of international business: the protection of intellectual property," Lenovo senior vice president Chen Shaopeng, who attended the signing ceremony, said in a statement on Thursday.
